Okay, this is going to be a story with a lot of chapters, I know it, I know it already.
See, I have come to be a bit frustrated about my monotone, everybody does it, just-go-to-COS-and-it’s-all-there minimalistic style. It’s okay, WE GET IT GARANCE, you left fashion and now you have an appeased relationship to style because you’re just better than all these fashionistas.
The thing is, I was looking at my wardrobe and I have EVERYTHING. I have the loafers, the boots, the coats, the sweaters, the bags. Sometimes, I’ve had them for years. (I have actually put them here for you, all tried and tested by me—some things are missing that I’ll add when I remember them).
I’m bored of seeing my doppelgängers* everywhere I go. Don’t you feel like we all walked straight out of a TikTok algorithm?
Also—I know good things are happening on the trend side, like the fact that we all want a red sock, but I want to be careful with that as well.
No, I want to build a new personal style.
Do you know when you’re saying something and you know as you’re saying it that it’s not going to work? That’s me right now. But I want to, at least, try.
And I know how to do it! I talked about it in my book. It takes three things.
1/ Knowing who you are, the real you.
2/ Knowing what you want to project, the dream you.
3/ Knowing where you live, what is your lifestyle, what are your needs, the practical you.
And the secret ingredient: Giving an actual f#@*k about it, which is where I usually fall a bit short. I am committed to style, but not as much as one could think for someone who adores nothing more than talking about clothes.
Okay, I’ve got to go, stay tuned for part 2 and let’s see if I can bake an actual style revolution**!
*It’s not that they’ve copied me, it’s just that we’ve all copied The Row and if I was somewhat early on that train, well, now the train is as crowded as the Central Line at 8.30 in the morning.
**Never be shy of a dramatic word when it comes to talking about fashion.
The last live is up! We talked about staying centered in difficult times, creativity, and so much more!
Here is a reel that captures my husband’s best Scottish accent.
The latest Letter was about what one does when one gets sent a d@&$k pic.
In the latest Note I talked about the deodorant dilemma.
Soon I’ll be starting the second season of my podcast. You can replay the first season here.
Doré has a new launch: Le Glaçon, a soothing facial ice-roller.
If you have any questions, let me know here! Love ya!
Also feeling this - I have about half the things on your list and substitutes for the other half - I’ve spent the past few years ‘investing’ in classic/elegant clothes, shoes and accessories and now I just dress the same as everyone else. I’m also a fan of Amy Smilovic / Tibi and their ‘creative pragmatist’ approach and I’m reading her content to try and get some new ideas of how to wear what I already have.
I also think that at 45 maybe it’s time to break the habit of a lifetime, stop shopping and make the most of what I have - the thrill of the new seems to have gone for me.
LOVE IT! Can’t wait❤️
