omg G. Totally. Perimenopause is kicking my ass, which is now softer than a European ice-cream. I really need to get back on the horse, which I think has bolted, but I feel some good intentions are around the corner. Perimenopause gave me a 24/7 vestibular migraine condition and it's knocked me for a six. I have to inject myself every four weeks with some drug to make me not feel like I am floating away into space. And other health stuff that is BORING but also MAJOR and so yeah...my weights and protein and self care is away with the birds, but one day soon, very soon, I will rise. And I will find that horse. And I will ride it into finding-my-goddamn-muscles-again...at least, that's what I keep telling myself. We can do this. But also, it's ok to not be on the horse sometimes. That's life. That's f*&king peri, mate.
I find it deeply refreshing to read. Everyone is so optimized these days. Not being so is so punk rock to me. Especially if lack of optimization is due to living and enjoying life.
‘Sometimes life isn’t about becoming a better version of yourself, or even about maintaining. Sometimes it’s just about getting through’ — YES.
How do I get through? Well, it’s either sporting (gym, swimming) because I know it makes me feel better, but sometimes I’m like you in this story and there is just always a reason to skip. Lately, there has been more than usual online shopping (even if it’s for my kids)…. 🫣🫣 I know it’s bad. My excuse is that I was a little fed up with my own wardrobe and adding a few nice things would at least give a little spark of joy on the surface level of my life 😜
Mostly, I know that all the difficult feelings I can have won’t last and I just try to go through them, trying (special focus on trying 🐵) not to attach too much importance to them.
Oh and I’ve started recently writing 10 things I’m grateful for at the end of every day and that lifts up my mood!
Ps and as far as my body is concerned: I’m still mourning the tight everything I used to have - breast to ass to legs to arms. I lift weights but it doesn’t seem to be enough to get back into my old shape. I’m ok with it (unless I’m in a bathing suit I can still dress and look nice), but deep down I really wished sometimes I had my old body. Ah! I shouldn’t complain though, I really look fine. But you know, always more critical towards our own bodies than others’!
Yes! Remembering that life, like nature, has seasons. We need to lie fallow, let things breathe and rest and germinate. Lots happening in our mind and soul in these moments, even if it’s not visible! 🌱
I’m giving myself grace because I finally had to admit that I’m just not ready to “do better”…omg protein, glute strengthening, not day drinking, not doom scrolling etc
Ah the perimenopause years. Give yourself a pass once in awhile. It's a major transition. Be gentle with yourself and try to allow room for learning new ways to feel good in your body.
PeriM is being challenging... so much so that what I expected it to be. The side that has been most affected is my sleeping pattern. I used to DEEP DEEP sleep on planes, with light or at any conditions. Now, I need to stick to my night routine to go through. I also feel much more sensitive and find myself crying for no reason whatsoever.
When it comes to exercise, what I truly enjoy is my 4 times a week (heavy) weightlifting sessions they are fundamental to help me navigate this part of my life. I've been consistent to that for many years and I´m at a point that I enjoy hitting the steal and waking up early in the morning to go to the gym. Protein, my sure bet to avoid crazy unhealthy cravings.
I'll be 50 in a week. I thank my body for responding the way it does, in order to go through I need to be consistent and be more careful and appreciative. What I need to do more is journalling, I think that will help me a lot.
Shoot, how do I get through? I listen to Gabor Mate, I snuggle with my cats (it’s like instant love), I sit out in the garden and literally just sit and woolgather, as they say, I’ll watch the Never Too Small YouTube channel about small interior design and architecture, I pour one more glass of wine and pair it with aforementioned woolgathering….I pray, breathe, call a friend.
Also, other than putting on yoga pants - wonderful side effect indeed - and as you travel a lot, dont you think a few destinations are more prone for a (un)healthier you? I imagine Corsica is about being with family around a table with copious amounts of good food yet lots of beach walks or hikes. Paris a bit more indulgent but with small portions and lots of walking. Saying so, how is Morocco for you? Does it call for the healthier Garance or the indulgent one? Kisses!
We’re so hard on ourselves! My mum says in 10 years time we’ll look at us now and think we were hot and beautiful. I believe her because I used to think 39 was old, and looking at pictures of me then I looked like a freshly picked daisy lol.
I would like to thing that perimenopause is a bridge to somewhere new. A crossing we didn’t ask for but that nature decided we’re ready to embark on.
It’s not easy to leave behind our younger selves and the body definitely complains every single step of the way during this transition.
Perhaps the kindest thing we can do is create new metrics of what beautiful is, what healthy is and find a new way to love who we are in a new era. That can be so empowering.
I am very much in a "just get through it" phase right now, so I hear you, loud and clear. Starting September when things will calm down (so good to have a date for that, ha life laughs!) I am recommitting to all the healthy things. Right now I'm just trying to get through it all with as much sanity as possible.

The end note feels like an unofficial European apology to North American dress codes. Bouncy kicks and tights for the win!

I don't fault myself for harmless fixations. Love Island...Real Housewives...sometimes you have to accept the lesser evils haha
So true about just getting through! Thanks for the reminder G 🩵
