The Note #61
Okay, I found you!
In my feverish dreams of being a womanly woman—one who had finally escaped sweatpants—there existed a pair of ideal boots: chic yet walkable.
Above all else, they wouldn’t make my ankles bulky. I wanted to wear them with jeans, pants, and skirts, yes, even skirts.
I searched all of last year, stubbornly avoiding these pretty perfect pair of Toteme boots because of their black elastic strap in the back.
I tried everything, at every price point. Until one day it dawned on me: the physics of boots.
A lightbulb moment when I finally understood the fact that if you want a boot to be walkable AND hug your ankles just right, you have to take into account that ankles need to move if you want to walk (fashion sometimes forgets that we have bodies and are not mannequins), therefore the boot needs either to be wide around the ankle (not my thing), made in a very soft leather (I like that), or have—you guessed it—an elastic band.
That same day, I gave in to the Totemes.
And I’m so glad. They’re super comfortable, very beautiful on the foot, snug on the ankle, look very cool with wide leg pants, have a very low heel and I know that right now you’re thinking “oh god this is an ad, bloody Garance!” but it’s not, it’s just the amount of thoughtfulness and excitement I put into these kinds of purchases.
By the way, I had already found the solve for the snug ankle with my Co glove boots, but the heel makes it less of an everyday shoe even though they’re wildly comfortable. For a heel. A heel, even wildly comfortable, is still a heel, and that’s something you know at 50. Like the physics of boots. At 50, you know everything.

So there you go, I am booted for the winter. Your increasingly womanly woman salutes you.
PS—I’ve made a little selection of boots for you here. Different price points, yay! Big kisses!
In my last Letter, I wrote about love, work, unexpected living arrangements, and the lightness that comes from letting go of expectations to create a life that truly works for me.
In my last Note, I said farewell to Carrie—and she, in turn, said farewell to the idea of a traditional happy ending.

At Doré, we launched two new incredible serums!!! They are formulated with a proprietary blend of silk peptides and natural ingredients that deliver visible transformation but do not irritate or sensitize your skin. Both are exclusive to Ulta Beauty and you can learn more about them here: Peptides Extreme Fermeté and Peptides Bouclier Intégral. I love them!

Love these!
I love that feeling of finding the perfect [whatever, boot, dress, etc.]. It's a real joy. Re: heels I always think of Joan Didion realizing she was getting older because she couldn't wear the 4-inch heels anymore. Something about how she never imagined not being able to wear them. Same, Joan, same.
