Today, I wanted to share a short excerpt from my latest Letter because I feel very smart about my new theory. Here’s the idea:
“Remove ten years from your age.
Good.
Take me as an example, I am now 39.
Now, feel it. You’re ten years younger, but you know everything you know. Yum!
Great.
Now think of all the things you would do if you actually were ten years younger.
Perfect.
Okay well now go ahead and do them.
Because in ten years you’ll look back and tell yourself you were SO YOUNG ten years ago, and you should have done the things.”
I’ve been applying this and it’s making me feel incredibly lively. It’s not so much about a number. It’s about how we think of ourselves. Is our world closing in on us, or is it a land of possibilities?
Then the day I posted the Letter, I listened to a podcast and a professor said that people who think they’re younger actually live younger, and are measurably stronger, healthier and happier—it’s researched and proven. So now I feel less smart and proud as if I had invented this theory—but still quite lively ;)
So whether we actively embrace ageing as a positive and empowering experience, or we just decide that in our head, we’re 10 or 20 years younger, let’s stop telling ourselves it’s too late, or we’re too old, or we’ve already tried and it didn't work. The best is yet to come!
ALL RIGHT, a disclaimer—some things are actually real, like fertility declining, wine not hitting the same, socks not washing themselves just like magic—I mean, assuming you don’t live with your parents anymore.
I’m not saying be reckless, just cultivate a healthy dose of delusional ;)
Go in peace now, my little spring chickens.
Signed,
Guru Garance.
In my last Letter, I share my latest meltdown, how I got really really mad at my husband (twice!), and also what I hope is a breakthrough!

My grandmother will be 97 years old next month. Though her mobility is affected, and her cataracts are there… she has a vibrant social life, lives alone in her house, and is more connected via technology than any of her grand/great-grandchildren. Decades ago, she decided that she didn’t have time for ‘old people’ - that is, people who think old and act old. Her friends are all decade(s) younger than her. She is curious, non-judgemental, open-minded. She is young - look into her eyes, listen to her thoughts and her stories… and she is a girl.
My partner and I were with her last week, and he asked her about the passage of time. He asked if 97 years has felt long. And she said no… that her life has passed in the blink of an eye. A reminder to be as present as can be, and to do what’s in your heart.
I’ve just celebrated another wonderful birthday, and I love the idea of operating from 26 this year. The whole world is before me. Thank you for this reframe, it is beautiful.
