I’ve been asked this question a lot, so in the spirit of my fearless reporting—and as your official French friend—I can say this with confidence: I like Emily in Paris.
I don’t like it the way I used to like Sex and the City, which had fashion, substance, and so much humour in it (and, in those first seasons, great dialogues too). But I like it the way I like And Just Like That—actually, now that I think about it, I like Emily in Paris much more because it’s not even trying to make any sense, at all.
Do I get mad at the glaring product placements? I don’t.
Do I ever laugh at the jokes? I don’t think I ever have.
Do I care about any of the characters? I actually don’t, even if I am studying the glorious embodiment of mature femininity by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu—because we need more fabulous and unapologetic women like her in our lives. (The question is—is smoking making a comeback?)
Do I even look forward to watching it? Not really.
You will say “But Garance, you’re describing a show you do NOT like!”
True, but not exactly.
Because when I do watch it, I appreciate it like I do a delectable boule de glace at Berthillon. It’s delicious, inoffensive, and overall lovely. The clothing is outrageously over the top, but what a wonderful eye candy. Paris is literally a cartoon, but I actually love seeing it all bright and happy. The plots are empty and nothing makes sense, and I think that’s the point.
It’s escapism. You put it on, sit back, turn your critical mind off and just get carried away from the real world, which we truly need sometimes.
Do I fast-forward the endless singing sessions? I do. I’m French. Whatever we do, we can’t ever turn our critical minds completely off.

Now here are a few shows I really like and that feel real, just for balance—
Industry. The story of young grads in the shark world of London finance. Not as deranged as Euphoria, and so far VERY good.
Slow Horses. A new season is out!!! I LOVE this show, Gary Oldman’s constant swearing probably being my favourite feature.
Okay—old but insanely good, and I’m mentioning it as you might have not heard about it because it’s a French show—The Bureau. Trust me on this one, it might be one of my favourite shows of all time.
