I love a little work event. But recently, I have decided to throw myself back into the world—like last week when I attended The Business of Fashion Gala absolutely not red-carpet ready—and it reminded me that I have two rather embarrassing issues.
1/ I will forget the names of people whose names I perfectly know.
The more stressful the event, the more I forget. It’s even worse if I know I need to introduce people. I’ll completely blank. It could be the Tom Cruise and I’ll blank. I’ll end up doing some borderline impolite move, such as saying to the person whose name I forgot, “This is my husband, Graham,” hoping that by some miracle “Tom” will say something like “Hi, I’m Tom,” and not wait for me to throw the expected “Graham, this is Tom.”
It’s SO EMBARRASSING that I usually let my friends know and beg them to introduce themselves first. Which they usually forget to do, lol.
2/ I have ten minutes. Twenty on a good day.
One of my superpowers is that I am charming and warm. I KNOW IT, okay? It’s not fake—I am genuinely curious about others. Here is the thing though. If the person and I don’t have much in common, I can get dreadfully boring incredibly quickly, borderline rude.
I am very bad at talking about the weather. I am one of these people who are too real and too deep or too outrageous and too honest. I don’t wear it as a badge of honor at all—my type can get annoying— and it’s a talent to be able to talk about nothing.
The problem is that there are often situations in which you need to be able to leave people on a high note. Clients, investors, journalists… I’ve learnt to see when the conversation is on life support, but apart from excusing myself to the bathroom or grabbing anyone around to resuscitate the conversation, I really don’t know what to do. Let’s not even start talking about seated dinners where you’re literally locked with someone until dessert.
DREAD! FEAR! So many toilet breaks it’s suspicious!!!
How do you do it?

“What do you most enjoy doing when you are not at these things?” - sometimes works well and can get into a nice snowball effect…♥️
I ask them if they have a book they read they like or what are hobbies they enjoy and get them talking about themselves or poke about to find a common enough interest.
