The Note #24
I Hate Wallets
I hate them so much I don’t have one.
My money, my credit cards, and other more vital items that should be treated with respect and care (my driver’s license, my various IDs, my Gail’s reward card) are all floating in a plastic summer pouch.
The last decent wallet I had I lost in our shipwreck about two years ago, and one could say it’s PTSD, but I think it’s just that I hate wallets. I don’t like zips, I don’t like logos, and I don’t like conspicuous hardware.
But I also don’t want anything boring. In other words I want something boring but I don’t want to be bored by it. I am turning into Fran Lebowitz.
The great ones, the well-organised ones where you see everything and feel like your life is in order are always way too big, and it makes me feel like I am a self important middle-aged woman on her way to her country club—which, I sort of am*, but that’s the point: you have to break character sometimes.
The small ones are fantastic when, like me, you like to wear a tiny bag, or no bag at all. But if you’re like me, then you either:
Loose it because it’s too small.
Cram all your things in to the point where nothing comes out and you spend five minutes at the counter trying to get anything out of it and everything falls on the floor.
So here I am, trying to decide which wallet I could tolerate, so I asked my friends who love their wallets to help me out, and here are theirs:
Emily has this one:
My sister has this one:
This is Heidi’s:
This is Graham’s, I actually got it for him—I used to have the same. I liked it but is was a bit too small, but still, I loved how small it was. Might make a come back?
This is Polly’s. It’s vintage, from her mother.
This is Farrah’s…
And this is Anouska's.
Here are a few wallets that I am thinking about. I love my friend’s ones, and overall, I think I’d like something a bit more organised than Graham’s and Heidi’s but a bit smaller than Emily’s.
Which ones are your favourites? Any I am missing?
*Babington House is hardly a country club, but also it kind of is.
First, because ‘tis the season, here is a gift idea: a subscription to The High Light! I know, genius!
In the last Note I talked about 6 things my dog taught me about health.
Here is our last live. We talked about moments of not knowing where to go next in our lives, and I shared my story and I realise, talked about a lot of things I hadn’t shared before!
My latest Instagram reel was about some of Graham’s and my favourite places to visit in Edinburgh.
